The height of summer

The height of summer

We’re in the southern hemisphere, and it’s January: It’s the height of summer! Days are long, the temperatures are a balmy one to two degrees centigrades, and gentle sleet blows horizontally across the water, piercing our skin as we navigate through the brash ice on our Zodiac boats.

This trip to Antarctica has been a short one: Two days of travelling through the Drake Passage to get here were followed by six days of exploring the peninsula, with landings and/or Zodiac cruising every day. Now, we’re already headed back through the Drake Passage, looking forward to a bit of a ‚Drake Shake‘ before we take our next group of guests on board in Ushuaia.

Next trip, I hope I get some blue skies and sunshine. Not because I haven’t enjoyed the grey skies, wind and snow of the Antarctic summer so far – but because Penguins simply look better on photos with a bright blue sky as a backdrop than on ones with a grey and sullen sky!
